This is the Monday post for the week of February 21 through February 27, 2011. And yes, it's late, I apologize; doctor's appointment and um, sleepy holiday.

PLEASE READ THIS. AT LEAST TO GET THE NEW TRANSACTION LOG ADDRESS.

Now.

Reminders

1.) February is a no-transaction fee for buying. Selling fees are the same as real-time fees.

2.) March will see the introduction of the ETF and mutual fund.

3.) We will be switching to a new spreadsheet format over the next while. Don't be surprised to see changes in your spreadsheets.

4.) When you are buying, please list the stock you are buying IN ITS ORIGINAL CURRENCY, not your own home currency.

If you want to list the amount you converted it to afterwards, that's fine--do so with a / after the original price eg:

Price: AUD$2.27/US$1.98

If your figures are a little off or you've misread the time, it allows me to know which one it is.

After some thought, the spreadsheet now has an optional box for adding the converted amount, since some of you like to do it yourself. You have to do write in the original currency, but in the other box below it, you can add your conversion.

PUT ONLY NUMBERS IN THOSE BOXES. Use the boxes to declare currency for declaring currency. With only numbers, I can automate the math easier.

New Things

1.) New transaction log. Please change your bookmarks. The old one retires as of March 1, 2011.

Transaction Log

Spreadsheet of Transaction Log

It's streamlined to a single page and will go a little faster (a lot faster). In compensation, check the help text on the questions, since some of them will ask for slightly more specific format. You don't need to know/remember exchange and currency codes right now, but you will need to remember to put it in so I can get a script working that will convert the amount correctly.

It will be absolutely vital you use the name you log into googledocs with when you record a transaction. The second question is your local currency; the abbreviations are listed there. Use them.

2.) We've been testing the new scripts for autoconversion and auto transactions. I'm going to do a primer here when the new logs are up, but the short version will be, everything that gets put in the transaction log will automatically go into your new spreadsheets on a page called Transaction Log. A script for automatic math will also run to get you market value, convert teh price to your currency, give you the price per share, and last update of your stock prices in real time. For the first month, it will be sometimes odd, but I'm re-recording manually every transaction in this community to a master post for myself with conversions already in place, so any problems can be corrected with the magic of undo.

3.) The following sites have autoupdating stock price scripts: Yahoo, Google, Businessweek, and Globe and Planet.

If you aren't using these, email me so I can create a script for you personally and adjust it to your individual site. For that matter, if you have any requests for scripts you'd like run, please email me so I can add them to my list. I've spent the last month learning how to use these. I can't yet use them all, but trust me when I say, if you want it, I will try very hard to learn it quickly.

4.) If anyone is like me and learns scripting for fun, email me with interest. The most basic understanding of javascript is required, meaning you know what it is. I can walk you through the learning curve. Google API has the Visualization API, which is stupid awesome, and I'd love someone to come play with me to see what we can do with that or with creating nice looking user interfaces instead of just the spreadsheet itself.

Also will now be listed on every Monday post:

Eligible Exchanges:

1.) NYSE, any version.
2.) Euronext, any version
3.) ASX - Australian Stock Exchange
4.) LSE - London Stock Exchange
5.) TSE - Tokyo Stock Exchange
6.) Hong Kong Stock Exchange
7.) Shanghai Stock Exchange
8.) Toronto Stock Exchange
9.) Deutsche Börse
10.) NASDAQ
11.) Any stock listed in your local market.

These are the exchanges anyone can buy from. As well as these, you can buy from any that are your local markets.

New Things

You are free to buy from any stock exchange in the world starting March 1st; everyone is now familiar with how this works, so I'm letting you run wild. There's a list in everyone's spreadsheet that I'll be updating as I add more. Some aren't normally accessible to westerners, some aren't accessible period, but many are, and Market Roulette is God's Stockbroker; we can get you anything.

Staring July 1st, if you buy from a market that is not one of the above or your local market, an international fee will be assessed at a rate of an additional USD$5.00 per transaction. That'll be out halfway point and when the community as a whole will be asked, encouraged, and required to input on what they like, don't like, and what they want changed.

New Markets

Full list of stock exchanges of the world, sort of.

List of African Stock Exchanges - some of these for reasons beyond my understanding were removed from the main list.

List of Mideast Stock Exchanges - same thing as above.

List of East Asian Stock Exchanges

List of South Asian Stock Exchanges

List of European Stock Exchanges

List of American Stock Exchanges - this includes Central and South America and the Caribbean nations.

List of Market Opening Times

More on Markets

I'm encouraging everyone to go look at the African markets, especially Nigeria and South Africa, and poke around the Middle East as well as the smaller emerging markets in the South Asia and consider the Caribbean and island nations. Get familiar with their companies and their interests. If you want to buy from them, send me the website so I can create a script for you to use for updating.

This is especially important with South Africa trying to build a Pan-African exchange, which could and will be a strong rival for the western markets. Australia's negotiation with Singapore is still in negotiations, but there are some interesting economic things happening in the Middle East now, especially with the revolution in Egypt and the continuing protests going on in Yemen, Syria, Libya, and Pakistan, and with Tunisia's new government.

These things aren't just political; Tunisia's revolution was based on the state of the economy and the lack of jobs as much as anything else. The economic will almost always give the best forecast of the political, so familiarity with the markets, the prices, what's doing well, will tell you not only the health of the country's economy, but the feel of the people.

It can't tell anyone everything; RL is far more complex. But it can and does give a glimpse of what's going on and where and how. When you buy and sell, note countries with dictatorships, US-backed or no, countries with constitutional or popular monarchies, and casually check poverty levels and colonial history if you have a chance; there is high correlation. Democracy is a catch phrase that covers a lot of sins; what you look for are governments that are sensitive and responsive to the will of the people.

New Transaction Log

Just to make sure everyone see this.

Important Dates

March 1 - transaction fees go into effect. Codicil: I'm going to put up a separate poll about this. Please look for it and respond.

March 1 - all world markets are now up for grabs. Go for it.

March 1 - ETFs and mutual funds are available for buying and selling.

March 1 - Dividend and Reinvest Dividends will come into play.

July 1 - international fees will be assessed when buying outside the top ten or your local markets. More on this later.

Final

As usual, any questions, please leave them here. This week will (I think) be very light for me, so I'm pretty much constantly available through Sunday night, no idea about next Monday yet.

Final, Take Two

[personal profile] imagina, [personal profile] allopen, and [personal profile] nafs - please contact me by email at seperis @ gmail. You three will be the first to use the new spreadsheet and I need to start customizing it to you specifically. This will be a lot easier if I can talk to each of you and make sure I get the formats correct. If at all possible, me and my comod would like to arrange a live chat session when I start so you can all watch and I can make any corrections you need.

Final, Take Three

Also, anyone who wants to start using the new individual spreadsheet and start using stock scripts, email me as well. The new spreadsheet pages will start appearing probably in March, but we'll most likely be staggering them as I customize them to each participant's currency, country, and timezone as well as website and I want to do this individually if it's at all possible so any unanticipated problems will be fixed. I'd prefer to do it while in AIM or YIM so I can get instant correction, so please email me when it would be convenien and we'll set up a schedule. This is to make your lives easier and eventually? Pie charts. Yes. Pie charts.

If you are on my flist, I will promise to like you much, much more if you volunteer early. Don't make me make sad locked posts that are vaguely passive aggressive and don't name names but are extremely pointed. Yes, I am looking at you.

Recorded!

Um. Unfortunately, the site we're importing the price from (businessweek) appends the euro symbol to the BEGINNING of the price. So while that will automatically update, gdocs won't treat it as a number. This means that in cell G13, to update the market value at the moment you'll have to manually enter it. (just go into the formula, you'll see where I've put the number)

I'm sorry about this :( Fail, gdocs.

Also, I went to check my purchase in the log, and it says:

"We're sorry, marie.jlr @ gmail.com does not have permission to access this spreadsheet."

But that's the email address I'm using with this. Am confused.

OK! All recorded. You didn't make any transactions for February, so I've used february's allowance for that. You've still got March's allowance to play with if you choose.
