jamethiel: Money! (Money)
[personal profile] jamethiel
I know, I'm sorry. I've been sick and [personal profile] seperis's work has gone insane. There have been a couple of changes this month.

First of all, we're going to monthly posts.

Secondly, [personal profile] seperis is going to a conference and will be away from the 22nd of June to the 10th of July. Does anyone want to be a temporary mod? The duties aren't very hard, just try to solve people's difficulties and maybe do the monthly post for July if my lungs continue to attempt to leave my body.

I believe I've picked up everyone's concerns--the stuff that I can't deal with, [personal profile] seperis will get to by the end of the week, but if anything has slipped through the cracks, please comment here to let us know.

Reminders

1.) June transaction fees are $4 for an automatic transaction and $7 for a real time transaction.

2.) You can buy and sell ETFs and Mutual Funds.

3.) We're in the process of updating spreadsheets. If you have problems, email one of us to check on it.

4.) When you are buying, please list the stock you are buying IN ITS ORIGINAL CURRENCY, not your own home currency. PUT ONLY NUMBERS IN THOSE BOXES. Use the boxes to declare currency for declaring currency. With only numbers, I can automate the math easier.

Transaction Log

We're still using the original, though I've shortened it to one page.

Remember to note if you already logged in the transaction log or not. Do not update your own transaction log in your personal spreadsheet. Put your transactions here or in teh main spreadsheet.

About half the spreadsheets are more or less updated to the new version. This is a quick tutorial on what's changed.

Instructions

This applies to people using the Transaction Log for their spreadsheets. If you use the comm, this doesn't apply to you.

Every spreadsheet now has a page called TransactionLog. This is not to replace the main log. This is a copy of all your personal transactions.

1.) After you enter your transactions in the main Transaction Log, you go to your spreadsheet, go to the menu Market (it's right after Help), and run Update Transactions and the script will take your transactions from the big log and put them in your log, format them, and convert them for you if necessary.

2.) After you run this, go to your Summary sheet. If they are brand new companies, you will see them update there from your log automatically; if you are adding shares of a company you already own, the number of shares should increase.

If you don't see them, this is weird and it only happens to about five of you, but this is the procedure.

On the Summary page, in the table, go to the Ticker label. You may see a tiny orange dot or triangle on the left side. Click on Ticker so its' outlined but not so you can edit the field. Then click control-R. I do not know why it does that to some people but not others. The mysteries of google continue.

3.) When the new transactions show up in Summary, go to the menu Market and run Update Stock Prices. It may take a few minutes. It should update all your stock prices.

4.) There is a sheet in your spreadsheet called DataPage. Scroll down to B77. There is a number there. That shows if you have any transactions in the main Transaction Log (the market roulette log, not your personal one) that haven't been transferred. It will also show the last time you ran the Update Transactions and Update Stock Prices scripts.

Do Not Do

1.) Do not add anything directly to the Summary page. The summary page is based on a set of internal spreadsheet scripts that use your TransactionLog Sheet. They are how soon we will have graphs.

2.) You do not need to add your transactions manually to your TransactionLog sheet. When you enter them in the main Transaction Log, you run Update Transactions in your spreadsheet and it will do all the moving and formatting automatically for you. As soon as we know it works manually, I'll add triggers so it will run scripts for you, but right now, you have to tell the scripts to run so if they fail, the scripts will email me with the log and the problem and I can do a fix.

If you want to start adding them manually to your own spreadsheet and not use the main transaction log, please tell me. I'll need a special script so I can copy them into the main log.

3.) If there is a failure, email me. Every country and every language has differences in how google accepts scripts. Some people require me to change all commas to semicolons, so not kidding. It's easy to fix.

4.) You cannot mess this up unfixably. Please don't panic if something looks wrong or suddenly goes out of whack. I put enough failsafes in here, and every spreadsheet has a Revision page. It'll be easy to fix.

Future

The summary page will have some additional features added over the next month.

Again, this is a slow process so everything we add works before we add something new. Some of you will have updates slightly faster depending on what the scripts are supposed to do and the country, since Singapore is apparently the perfect testing country.

Some of you haven't yet gotten the update. Don't worry. I made a copy of your spreadsheet to apply the scripts, but they failed and I'm trying to find out why before I update.

Any questions of any kind, email or comment here. I'll also be online most night thsi week, so feel free to say hi in yahoo or aim or google.

This is the Monday post for the week of March 28 through April 3, 2011.

Reminders

1.) Belatedly: March is a de facto a no-transaction fee for buying. Selling fees are the same as real-time fees. With spreadsheet updates and my inability to get to googledocs from home consistently, it's more practical.

2.) It is March--you can buy and sell ETFs and Mutual Funds.

New Things

You are free to buy from any stock exchange in the world starting March 1st; everyone is now familiar with how this works, so I'm letting you run wild. There's a list in everyone's spreadsheet that I'll be updating as I add more. Some aren't normally accessible to westerners, some aren't accessible period, but many are, and Market Roulette is God's Stockbroker; we can get you anything.

The winner of the last competition was [personal profile] eponymousanon
A dividend is money that a company pays to its shareholders to reward them for investing in the company. Paying dividends is always a balancing act between maximising profit, saving money for further development/expansion and rewarding shareholders.
(from [personal profile] eponymousanon)
Ex-dividend date: aka reinvestment date, the date at which point subsequent stock buyers are not entitled to the upcoming dividend. It's meant to clarify who exactly is entitled to an announced dividend payment by defining the investment dates that are applicable.

Now, onto the game stuff!

We've been gradually going over your spreadsheets. More and more people will get them as the month progresses. We'll usually make a post here announcing it.

Reminders

1.) March will see the introduction of the ETF and mutual fund.

2.) We will be switching to a new spreadsheet format over the next while. Don't be surprised to see changes in your spreadsheets.

3.) When you are buying, please list the stock you are buying IN ITS ORIGINAL CURRENCY, not your own home currency.

After some thought, the spreadsheet now has an optional box for adding the converted amount, since some of you like to do it yourself. You have to do write in the original currency, but in the other box below it, you can add your conversion.

PUT ONLY NUMBERS IN THOSE BOXES. Use the boxes to declare currency for declaring currency. With only numbers, I can automate the math easier.

Updated

The following spreadsheets are updated with the new pages and--with any luck--are operational:

[personal profile] out_there
[personal profile] lebannen
[personal profile] nafs
[personal profile] jenna_thorn
[personal profile] roguewords
[personal profile] loriel_eris
[personal profile] eponymousanon
[personal profile] thexpuzzler

Most transactions have been added; if anything looks wrong or we missed one or one is incorrect, email me to correct it.

There's been a new menu added to the top of your spreadsheet located after Help - it's named Market. You may also see one called "Mod" or "Moderator"--ignore that one.

Market has four functions listed. Currently, only Update Stock Prices is operational; I haven't added the other scripts yet and won't until next week. Do not use them yet. Some people have them, some don't, because the script only runs during blue moons and I want higher accuracy than that.

Stock Update Prices checks Yahoo, Google, Businessweek, and Globe and Planet, so it pretty much got everyone I've added so far and hasn't errored out when I've run it. However, google is weird; if you cannot run Stock Update Prices or it errors, email me so I can switch security settings and find one that works. Apparently, it's kind of magical and what works for one person will not work for anyone else, ever.

If you want another site added to check, please leave a comment. I can't guarantee I can add it, but I can tell you if it's possible.

Update Dividends, Update Transactions, and Update User Settings will be added next week after I've seen these run for a week.

Next Thursday we'll add the next group, chosen by activity level.

Also Updated

The Transaction Log's been altered and shortened, since we can't change over to another. I tested it and it works the same, just now with fewer questions all on one page.

Questions, comments, add here, otherwise, happy investing!

[personal profile] seperis has been amazingly busy! We've gotten the scripts and the new individual spreadsheets... sort of up and running, bar testing. [personal profile] lebannen and [personal profile] thexpuzzler, have a look at your sheets but don't touch them yet. We'll give it a day or so to see if things are working, and then we'll start rolling them out to each user. We'll post with an explanation of how to use the new sheets later.

4.) We're going to talk about DIVIDENDS this week! As homework, I want you all to look at the stocks you have. I want you to list any stocks you own that have ever listed dividends, what those dividends were, and a definition of ex-dividend date and how much you would receive if you had ten shares. First five people to comment to this post with that information gets $20 extra dollars towards their monthly total.

If none of your shares have dividends, pick a share from your market that does.

So far as I can tell, this is a random occurrence of google docs. I created a test one and tried with a few friends and pretty much the same thing happened.

I need quick clarification:

a.) Can you use the new Transaction Log?
b.) Can you see the new Transaction Log Spreadsheet?

Options

1.) If you can record but not see, we can wait for Google to--whatever--or I'll keep creating a transaction log a day and when one starts working, I'll switch.

2.) You can also keep using the old transaction log.

3.) You can record transactions here.

4.) You can have your very own custom transaction log in your spreadsheet.

For four, it's very doable and I have a working copy, but as imagina and I figured out, no matter how well something works for one person, it will not work for the next, and everything starts over again. It's a fairly basic UI that would be pretty much teh same as the main transaction log, but pop up when you open your spreadsheet and select it.

It will not be ready until probably April, though I may start beta testing it earlier.

The new spreadsheets will go out staggered over the next two weeks while I integrate the pages in. It's not going to be an entire new workbook, just new pages, with the old ones renamed so history can be integrated and so I can fiddle with the scripting. Do not panic, your current will still be there and still be working while we move everything, which is more practical than creating them anew.

Allopen and Nafs (I know you emailed me! I wasn't online that one night, gah), I still need to test with both of you. Please email or message me ASAP so we can start.

If you don't have time to meet, a tutorial will be up sometime this month. It's fairly straightforward once we move all the transactions, so don't panic.

This is the Monday post for the week of February 21 through February 27, 2011. And yes, it's late, I apologize; doctor's appointment and um, sleepy holiday.

PLEASE READ THIS. AT LEAST TO GET THE NEW TRANSACTION LOG ADDRESS.

Now.

Reminders

1.) February is a no-transaction fee for buying. Selling fees are the same as real-time fees.

2.) March will see the introduction of the ETF and mutual fund.

3.) We will be switching to a new spreadsheet format over the next while. Don't be surprised to see changes in your spreadsheets.

4.) When you are buying, please list the stock you are buying IN ITS ORIGINAL CURRENCY, not your own home currency.

If you want to list the amount you converted it to afterwards, that's fine--do so with a / after the original price eg:

Price: AUD$2.27/US$1.98

If your figures are a little off or you've misread the time, it allows me to know which one it is.

It's streamlined to a single page and will go a little faster (a lot faster). In compensation, check the help text on the questions, since some of them will ask for slightly more specific format. You don't need to know/remember exchange and currency codes right now, but you will need to remember to put it in so I can get a script working that will convert the amount correctly.

It will be absolutely vital you use the name you log into googledocs with when you record a transaction. The second question is your local currency; the abbreviations are listed there. Use them.

Final

As usual, any questions, please leave them here. This week will (I think) be very light for me, so I'm pretty much constantly available through Sunday night, no idea about next Monday yet.

Final, Take Two

[personal profile] imagina, [personal profile] allopen, and [personal profile] nafs - please contact me by email at seperis @ gmail. You three will be the first to use the new spreadsheet and I need to start customizing it to you specifically. This will be a lot easier if I can talk to each of you and make sure I get the formats correct. If at all possible, me and my comod would like to arrange a live chat session when I start so you can all watch and I can make any corrections you need.

Final, Take Three

Also, anyone who wants to start using the new individual spreadsheet and start using stock scripts, email me as well. The new spreadsheet pages will start appearing probably in March, but we'll most likely be staggering them as I customize them to each participant's currency, country, and timezone as well as website and I want to do this individually if it's at all possible so any unanticipated problems will be fixed. I'd prefer to do it while in AIM or YIM so I can get instant correction, so please email me when it would be convenien and we'll set up a schedule. This is to make your lives easier and eventually? Pie charts. Yes. Pie charts.

If you are on my flist, I will promise to like you much, much more if you volunteer early. Don't make me make sad locked posts that are vaguely passive aggressive and don't name names but are extremely pointed. Yes, I am looking at you.

This is the Monday post for the week of February 14 through February 20, 2011.

Please read this; this is mandatory information regarding updates to market_roulette.

March 2011

March will start the first month of transaction fees and the first month of availability of mutual funds and ETFs. Before teh end of the month, both will be covered by short tutorials, but trust me, they're nothing to be worried about.

March will also show a change in how we record transactions and get stock prices to autoupdate, which has been a problem.

Your Individual Spreadsheets

In March, your individual spreadsheets will be changing slightly to pursue autoupdating from the transaction log. I've been doing this in steps to see if it could be done without inconvenience, and as it turns out, it works if I script everything, and so I had to learn how to script first. So I did. Note: motivation is the key to learning something very fast. Shocking, I know. I was very motivated.

Expandplease read: spreadsheet changes )

Basically, I'm going to make this as much like a portfolio as possible. Eventually, I'll build an interface for you to use and you won't need to look directly at the spreadsheet at all, but I didn't have time to do much with that other than learn the outline of how it's done from google apps. Eventually, if I'm right, I should be able to move your buying and selling to your personal interface entirely, but I don't know hwo long it will take to get good at making them, so that will have to wait a month or two.

You and the Transaction Log

Since we can move to autoupdating, I'm stripping it down since some of the information was needed to record the transactions, and since it will do that for us, it's not needed. The new log will have fewer pages and require less information to complete, but will require higher accuracy.

Expandplease read: transaction log changes )

You and the Scripts

The scripts will be housed in everyone's spreadsheets and tweaked around when they go into effect. I've been running these on Seperis World conditions, not Real World, and God knows there will be fail points I haven't seen yet, including the fact that all websites are inconsistent and the way I have them pulling information will have fail points I'll have to write workarounds for.

I'm going to ask at first that you don't make any changes to the scripts themselves but create a copy to make changes to if you're inclined to that sort of thing. It's something I do--well, something I do a lot, come to think--and I encourage anyone to tweak them around as much as they like. And ask if you want help tweaking! If I can't figure it out, I can learn how.

If you'd like to learn about them and how they run, I'd love to go over it with you. They're fairly simple and I've gone back to document them, so anything in there that you'd like to change or tweak is fine. Just do it on separate copies. The Data page has some of the outline of where things are that the scripts are running on and are reference points for the scripts themselves.

To get anyone started who is interested, below is the code for the script to pull prices from Globe and Mail. The ones for Yahoo and Businesweek use almost exactly the same format, just tweaked for individual site.

Currently, they pull the following information by ticker; company name, stock price, stock exchange, stock currency, and current date and time. I've added documentation notes here. Note are behind :::: so you can copy and paste this into your spreadsheet if you want to test it using the ticker format on Globe and Mail after removing anything between :::: and ::::

Er, this is one of the ones with the odd variable names.

Final

If anyone wants to volunteer to beta test the new spreadsheet, drop a comment here and we can start you off early. Nothing will happen to your current one then or after the change; a whole new workbook will be created for this.

Happy trading!

(And by justice, I mean conversions)

OK! We have a poll for conversions! Remember a while back, we asked all non-American participants to choose a method that they wanted their conversions done? Well, you've had a month to experience it, so let's ask again and give you a chance to say what options you want!

I'd like everyone to take this poll, please. Even Americans, cause if you want to buy overseas stock, I'd like to know how you want your money converted.

If you need more information to make your choices, the conversion data for real time/daily/monthly is here

Finally, I will be going through your spreadsheets and duplicating your sheet for January and making it current for February. I'll be making a few small changes (your conversion choice will be put up the top of your spreadsheet as a reminder to me). I'll also be gathering game data so we can see who had the biggest gain/greatest loss over January.

As always, any questions or concerns, please let us know.
