This is the Monday post for the week of March 28 through April 3, 2011.

Reminders

1.) Belatedly: March is a de facto a no-transaction fee for buying. Selling fees are the same as real-time fees. With spreadsheet updates and my inability to get to googledocs from home consistently, it's more practical.

2.) It is March--you can buy and sell ETFs and Mutual Funds.

3.) We're in the process of updating spreadsheets. If you have problems, email one of us to check on it.

4.) When you are buying, please list the stock you are buying IN ITS ORIGINAL CURRENCY, not your own home currency.

PUT ONLY NUMBERS IN THOSE BOXES. Use the boxes to declare currency for declaring currency. With only numbers, I can automate the math easier.

Transaction Log

We're still using the original, though I've shortened it to one page.

Transaction Log

We'll probably just keep posting this in every Monday post for easy reference. Remember to note if you already logged in the transaction log or not. Question has been added to each of these.

5.) TSE - Tokyo Stock Exchange
6.) Hong Kong Stock Exchange
7.) Shanghai Stock Exchange
8.) Toronto Stock Exchange
9.) Deutsche Börse
10.) NASDAQ
11.) Any stock listed in your local market.

These are the exchanges anyone can buy from. As well as these, you can buy from any that are your local markets.

New Things

You are free to buy from any stock exchange in the world starting March 1st; everyone is now familiar with how this works, so I'm letting you run wild. There's a list in everyone's spreadsheet that I'll be updating as I add more. Some aren't normally accessible to westerners, some aren't accessible period, but many are, and Market Roulette is God's Stockbroker; we can get you anything.

Staring July 1st, if you buy from a market that is not one of the above or your local market, an international fee will be assessed at a rate of an additional USD$5.00 per transaction. That'll be out halfway point and when the community as a whole will be asked, encouraged, and required to input on what they like, don't like, and what they want changed.

New Markets

Full list of stock exchanges of the world, sort of.

List of African Stock Exchanges - some of these for reasons beyond my understanding were removed from the main list.

List of Mideast Stock Exchanges - same thing as above.

List of East Asian Stock Exchanges

List of South Asian Stock Exchanges

List of European Stock Exchanges

List of American Stock Exchanges - this includes Central and South America and the Caribbean nations.

List of Market Opening Times

More on Markets

I'm encouraging everyone to go look at the African markets, especially Nigeria and South Africa, and poke around the Middle East as well as the smaller emerging markets in the South Asia and consider the Caribbean and island nations. Get familiar with their companies and their interests. If you want to buy from them, send me the website so I can create a script for you to use for updating.

This is especially important with South Africa trying to build a Pan-African exchange, which could and will be a strong rival for the western markets. Australia's negotiation with Singapore is still in negotiations, but there are some interesting economic things happening in the Middle East now, especially with the revolution in Egypt and the continuing protests going on in Yemen, Syria, Libya, and Pakistan, and with Tunisia's new government.

These things aren't just political; Tunisia's revolution was based on the state of the economy and the lack of jobs as much as anything else. The economic will almost always give the best forecast of the political, so familiarity with the markets, the prices, what's doing well, will tell you not only the health of the country's economy, but the feel of the people.

It can't tell anyone everything; RL is far more complex. But it can and does give a glimpse of what's going on and where and how. When you buy and sell, note countries with dictatorships, US-backed or no, countries with constitutional or popular monarchies, and casually check poverty levels and colonial history if you have a chance; there is high correlation. Democracy is a catch phrase that covers a lot of sins; what you look for are governments that are sensitive and responsive to the will of the people.

Important Dates

July 1 - international fees will be assessed when buying outside the top ten or your local markets. More on this later.

OK, looking at your spreadsheet that seems to be updating fine. Can you check everything over and confirm it?

I've just made 5 buys using the Transaction Log, and having checked the transaction spreadsheet, my ineptitude is showing... The times for all the transactions were GMT+1 (UK has now hit British Summer Time...) and the times for the last three transactions (which I swear I entered!) were ~2230, ~2235 and ~2345.

No worries. I'll chat about it with seperis. It may be a problem with the log.

Oh! Oh! Ooooh! That was like magic. I have been very afraid to y'know touch anything, because I have been too busy to explore and I had horrible visions of totally destroying the spreadsheet. It was particularly awesome watching the script work updating the stock prices. I can see this getting addictive...

One question - the RBS and Berkley shares I bought, perhaps not so coincidentally, the only GBp shares I have, have rather blank lines in the Investment summary sheet. Has something fallen over there?

PS

I've just realised that I also seem to be missing shares:

ARM Holdings - from January, which does show in the old Summary sheet and the Transaction Log (in my personal spreadsheet), but not in my Summary spreadsheet (which I'm assuming should be the 'correct' version?)

RBS - from February, which I didn't do on the transaction log, but did do here

I... may have messed up?

So. I ran the script, hit ok on the bit that said (paraphrasing) "someone else wrote this script, are you sure you trust them?" and then one of the pop windows said "you can now run the script". Wasn't sure if it had done anything, so, went to Market -> Update Transactions again and this time got a pop saying I'd made you cry (which by the way, the one of the best error messages I've seen in a long time! *g*), but I'm sorry for making you cry. And I've no idea if it worked the first time or not.

The "Are you sure you trust them" is fine. Seperis wrote the scripts! She is completely trustworthy! *g*

The error message is part of the troubleshooting process. It will email her with what exactly broke from and where and she will fix it. Don't worry. I made her cry a LOT--my job is to break things and I am disturbingly good at it.

I don't know that this is entirely necessary but I'm officially skipping March, in case someone's logging that. Mostly because I fail at paying proper attention to these things? *sigh*

Oh, I know. It's just spending half an hour at lunch trying to figure out what to do on the last day of the month with way too many work things to do in the three hours between lunch and market close makes making a decision a little difficult *g*

Hi :) I have 4 stocks I am interested in for April, but I'm not sure of buying fees so I dont know if I want to do 4 or less, and 2 of them are currently at prices I dont want to buy at anyway. So I'm putting in the buys for the two currently at good prices as 1/4 each of my April money, but depending on transaction fees I may later change that to 1/3 or even 1/2 - so if you could put a reminder about fees (since this is the first month they go into effect and I can tremember them from way back in December - thanks ;)

Company: Pegasus metals limited
Ticker: PUN.AX
Time: 11.08am my time

Company: Zamia Metals limited
Ticker: ZGM.AX

I'm actually going to do your spreadsheet next, so be prepared for some changtes!
Transaction fees are as follows (I think they're in USD, I'll need to clarify that)
Automatic $4
Free $0
Real-Time $7

Could I please get you to put those in the transaction spreadsheet? It means that we can do nifty things with scripts!

okay I put those transactions through yesterday, but they are still not in my spreadsheet - did I do something wrong, or is it because mine is still the old sheet??

Have you had a look at your spreadsheet? There are some bugs, but we've given you an entirely new set of sheets.

Are you ok with waiting a couple of days until we can get the bugs sorted out of your new sheets? If not, I'll put them in the old summary, but I'm just a little reluctant to duplicate the work.

am looking at it now - doesn't look any different? though google docs is not supported on this browser, so maybe its giving me a more primitive view? I'll have a look at it when I get home from work and see if it looks fancy and new on a browser from this century ;)

I dont mind waiting, no need to do things twice :)
